Breast Self-Examinations
Performing a breast self-examination doing so once a month can help detect any potential issues early.
In front of a mirror
Stand in front of a mirror. Raise your arms above your head and check for any irregularities of your breasts, for example, dimpling, marks, shrunken or misshapen nipples, or if the breasts are sitting in an irregular position.
During a shower
Raise one hand above your head. With your other hand, squeeze your nipple to see if there is any discharge of blood, puss, or other fluid. Use 3 fingers (index, middle, and ring finger) to feel the breast in a circular motion, moving outwards towards the armpit. Doing a breast self-exam in the shower allows for less friction when moving your fingers along the breast.
While lying down
Lie down and extend one arm above your head, support the shoulder with a pillow and turn your head to the side. Use 3 fingers (index, middle, and ring finger) to feel the breast in a circular motion, moving outwards towards the armpit.
