What is the importance of Preventive Cancer Screening?
Cancer is a complex disease that may lead to a high mortality rate. The dire consequences of cancer increases as cancer proceeds into later stages, so detecting it early and seeking treatment is associated with better outcomes. The cause of cancer, once thought to be primarily through genetics, is multifactorial. Based on studies findings, hereditary genes account for only 5-10% of cancer. This evidence strongly supports that poor lifestyle behavior’s (i.e. smoking/lack of exercise/poor diet) and environmental factors (i.e. heavy metal exposure/pollution) are the underlying cause of the majority of cancers placing many individuals at a moderate to high risk.

The recent screening method such as Colonoscopy for Colon cancer, Mammogram for Breast Cancer and Low dose CT for lung Cancer usually detect cancer when cancer cells are small. However, the methods do not take environmental factors into account, which are the main contributing factors to developing cancer. Therefore reducing cancer risks through environmental factors is important.

What are we investigating at the Esperance Integrative Cancer Center?

1. Immune System
Cancer cells are considered as foreign particles like bacteria, fungi, and viruses. When they invade the body, our immune system detects and eliminates them. When the immune system is weakened, cancer cells take this opportunity to grow and become stronger. By evaluating your immune system function, we can help you strategize your cancer risk reduction’s action plan.

2. Inflammatory signals
Chronic inflammation may occur during cancer development or tumor progression. Analyzing for specific inflammatory signals, such as C-reactive protein (CRP), allows us to determine if there is an increased cancer risk to provide early intervention.

3. Heavy metals
Heavy Metal exposure is almost inevitable without close attention because they are found in our food and environment. Toxic heavy metals can potentially generate reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS causes stress and chronic inflammation, which may increase the risk of cancer cell formation.

4. An alteration of cellular energy production
In 1924, Otto Warburg, a German physician, discovered that cancer cells have a different metabolic pathway from normal cells by using glucose to create lactic acid, This is called “The Warburg effect”, which is considered one of the hallmark of cancer. Assessment of pyruvate kinase M2 (M2PK) enzyme evaluates the possibility of cancer cells formation in our body. By detecting the flawed metabolism of the cell, we are able decrease the risk of cancer

Self-Preparation
  1. Fasting is not required prior to the test.
  2. Please inform our Esperance physicians and staffs if you have a medical condition, undergoing treatments, and your current medication, Herbal product and Supplement list.
  3. Contact us at Esperance Integrative cancer clinic, Bumrungrad international Hospital, building C, 11th floor

You will receive a detailed summary of your results in approximately 14 working days. If risks are present, recommendations may include lifestyle alterations (diet and exercise), supplements or further diagnostic testing. A follow-up appointment may be necessary to ensure a complete holistic treatment plan.

Initial immune assessment

Why complete Comprehensive immune assessment (ESP)
The immune system is the primary barrier that protect the body from pathogens i.e. bacteria, fungi, virus and also cancer cell. Our body consists of a trillion of cells. Everyday our cells duplicate themselves to replace dead cells and to maintain their function. It is inevitable that our body could undergo these processes perfectly without any errors.
Imagine, when these abnormal cells go undetected and not destroyed then these cells could develop into cancer and spread to other parts of body. Thus, the immune system plays an important role in detecting and eliminating those cells. This is the reason why we need to take good care of our immune system.

What do we assess?
  1. Quantity assessment: Evaluate amount of immune cell that you have in your body.
  2. Quality assessment: Assess how well your immune cell could eliminate pathogens.

Recommend for
  1. All individual who would like to check their immune health
  2. All individual who are interested in cancer prevention
  3. People who would like to prevent virus infection or already got infected by certain virus (herpes virus, EBV, HBV, HCV)

After the test
You will receive a detailed summary of your results in approximately three days. If risks are present, recommendations may include lifestyle modification (diet and exercise), supplements or further diagnostic testing. A follow-up appointment may be scheduled to ensure risk reduction success post intervention(s).
