Finding a breast lump does not automatically mean you have breast cancer. Most lumps are benign. Doctors evaluate a breast lump through a comprehensive three-step approach: a clinical breast exam, diagnostic imaging, and a tissue biopsy only if necessary.
Dense breasts are common and are not abnormal. However, they matter because dense tissue can make some breast cancers harder to see on mammography and is independently associated with increased breast cancer risk.
Breast cancer is less common before age 40, but being young does not rule it out. Because routine mammography usually has not started for average-risk women in their 20s and 30s, recognizing breast changes and understanding your personal risk are especially important.
