Dilatation and Curettage (D&C)

Dilation and curettage (D&C) is an obstetrical procedure where instruments are inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterus to remove the uterine contents, whether for further examination and diagnosis or as a treatment for a uterine problem.

Benefits
  1. In a miscarriage a dilation and curettage may be done to remove any residual tissue from the fetus or placenta to prevent infection and hemorrhage.
  2. In the case of a benign or malignant growth in the uterine cavity, a dilation and curettage may be done to remove tissue for further examination in the laboratory.
  3. For diagnosis and/or treatment of excessive and/or abnormal uterine bleeding.
  4. To investigate the cause of infertility.
  5. To investigate hormonal abnormalities in menopausal patients who continue to experience vaginal bleeding.
Treatment options depend on the reason for the dilation and curettage and may include:
  1. Removing samples of the endometrium for further testing
  2. Exploratory laparoscopy of the uterine cavity
