Cardiac Rehabilitation: The Key to a Stronger Heart and Better Quality of Life

At Bumrungrad International Hospital, our Cardiac Rehabilitation Team is dedicated to providing comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation services for heart patients, including those who have undergone cardiac and thoracic surgery. Our experienced multidisciplinary team — consisting of cardiac rehabilitation physicians, physical therapists, nutritionists, pharmacists, and nurses — shares the common goal of helping patients strengthen their hearts, reduce the risk of complications, decrease mortality rates, and minimize the chance of recurrent heart disease. Most importantly, we aim to enable patients to exercise longer and significantly improve their quality of life.

Cardiac rehabilitation is a critical process that helps heart patients resume normal daily activities, experience less fatigue, regain physical and mental wellness comparable to pre-illness levels, and return to work.

Our team focuses not only on heart conditions but also on every individual factor affecting each patient — including lifestyle, risk factors, current health status, and social and cultural backgrounds. With this personalized rehabilitation approach, we ensure highly effective, tailored care.

Leading global health organizations — including the World Health Organization (WHO), National Heart Foundation of Australia, American Heart Association (AHA), and American College of Cardiology (ACC) — recommend that all patients who have experienced acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) and received treatments such as balloon angioplasty, stent placement, or bypass surgery, as well as patients with coronary artery disease, heart failure, or other heart surgeries, undergo cardiac rehabilitation to ensure a better long-term quality of life.

Consult your cardiologist or our cardiac rehabilitation physicians to see if you should join a cardiac rehabilitation program. Our multidisciplinary team is ready to offer personalized guidance to help you successfully adopt a healthier lifestyle.

While treatments such as medication, balloon angioplasty, stent placement, or bypass surgery are essential, they do not cure heart disease. Preventing recurrence and reducing risk factors rely heavily on lifestyle changes and regular exercise.

We are here to help patients achieve a stronger heart and a better quality of life through:
  • Safe, confident, and maximized exercise.
  • Understanding patients’ heart conditions and knowing how to care for them properly.
  • Recognizing and managing risk factors.
  • Empowering lifestyle changes toward better health.
  • Providing long-term care and support.
  • Reduces mortality by 20–30%.
  • Decreases the risk of recurrent heart disease.
  • Enhances cardiovascular strength and endurance.
  • Improves control over other risk factors (blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, weight, and stress).
  • Builds confidence in performing daily activities independently.
Before beginning the exercise program, every patient will undergo a risk assessment and physical fitness evaluation to design a personalized, safe exercise plan.

Cardiac rehabilitation is divided into three stages:
  • Inpatient rehabilitation: Focuses on initiating light exercise, educating patients, reducing anxiety about returning home, and guiding the transition back to daily life.
  • Outpatient rehabilitation: Doctors and physical therapists jointly design a tailored program for each patient, typically covering of 2–12 weeks, program and frequency are depending on the patient's condition.
  • Maintenance: Patients exercise independently at home or in community fitness centers, with ongoing support and follow-up from the cardiac rehabilitation team.
Personalized Exercise Programs
Exercise intensity is individually customized under close supervision of the cardiac rehab team. Progress is carefully monitored, including ECG (electrocardiogram) monitoring during exercise sessions, to ensure safety and maximize benefits. Patients are guided to continue exercising safely at home after completing the structured program.
