Invisalign Clear Aligners for Children and Teenagers
Addressing misaligned teeth or jaw issues during childhood and adolescence lays the foundation for a beautiful smile and long-term oral health. Early orthodontic intervention not only simplifies treatment but also prevents complications such as tooth decay, gum disease, bone loss, and deterioration of dental tissues.
Invisalign First for Younger Children (Ages 8–9)
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children see an orthodontist by age seven to assess their teeth alignment and bite. This allows for early detection and intervention. Treatment typically begins when children are around 8–9 years old—at this stage, they usually have four front permanent teeth and two permanent molars, making it ideal for correcting jaw and facial structure issues.
Invisalign clear aligners are particularly suitable for young children because they are easy to clean, can be worn throughout the day (even during meals), and can be removed for cleaning when needed.
The goal of Invisalign First is to address essential orthodontic concerns without focusing on full aesthetic results. Treatment generally takes no more than 1.5 years. After that, a retainer may be worn for about 6 months until all permanent teeth come in—typically around age 11 or later.
Ideal Candidates for Invisalign First:
-
Children with a crossbite (lower front teeth overlap the upper teeth), whether one tooth or multiple teeth
-
Children with severely protruding front teeth at risk of chipping from falls
-
Children experiencing self-confidence issues due to dental appearance
Invisalign Teen for Teenagers (Ages 11–19)
Orthodontic treatment for teenagers is not based solely on age, but on a combination of dental age, chronological age, and skeletal development. For example, girls who have started menstruating may be advised to start treatment sooner, while boys may start later.
Typical treatment duration is 2–3 years. However, teens who had early orthodontic intervention may require only 1–1.5 years.
Steps for Invisalign Treatment:
-
Consultation with an orthodontist
-
Oral check-up, tartar removal, and cavity fillings (if needed)
-
Diagnostic records such as X-rays and mouth scans
-
Receive aligners and attend check-ups every 3 months
Benefits of Invisalign Clear Aligners:
-
Better oral hygiene: Children can brush and floss more effectively since aligners are removable. General dentists can perform routine cleanings and exams as usual.
-
Less discomfort: Aligners cause less irritation and do not scrape the inner cheeks.
-
More flexibility: Parents and children can handle minor issues themselves if aligners are damaged or lost.
-
Fewer dental visits: Check-ups are every 3 months versus monthly visits for traditional braces.
Limitations of Invisalign Treatment:
-
Higher cost compared to traditional metal braces
-
More parental involvement: Since appointments are less frequent, parents must ensure children wear the aligners consistently for the treatment to progress as planned
