Why You Are Unable to Burp: The Causes Many People Do Not Know About
You experience chest tightness, bloating, and a rumbling or gurgling sensation suggesting trapped air in the chest, yet no matter what you do, you are unable to burp. Many people mistake this for simple gas or common acid reflux; however, the inability to burp may actually be retrograde cricopharyngeal dysfunction (RCPD) — a disorder that has only recently gained recognition within the medical community.

Why and How Does Burping Occur?

Burping occurs when gas accumulates in the stomach or esophagus due to eating, drinking, or talking. As gas builds up and causes the stomach or esophagus to distend, the body automatically signals the lower esophageal sphincter (located between the esophagus and the stomach) and the upper esophageal sphincter (located in the throat) to relax. This allows the trapped gas to escape through the mouth, resulting in a burp.

Why Are Some People Unable to Burp?

The sensation of abdominal fullness accompanied by an inability to burp may result from the upper esophageal sphincter failing to relax normally to release gas. This dysfunction is a key characteristic of retrograde cricopharyngeal dysfunction, or RCPD, a condition that causes gas to accumulate in the stomach or esophagus, leading to chronic discomfort.

Symptoms Associated with the Inability to Burp

Common symptoms include:
  • Not being able to burp
  • Bloating and early abdominal fullness
  • Chest tightness
  • Gurgling sounds in the upper chest near the throat
  • Excessive flatulence

Does an Inability to Burp Always Indicate RCPD?

The inability to burp does not necessarily mean that the person experiencing this symptom has RCPD. The body's failure to expel gas through the mouth and nose can also be the symptom of one of many other gastrointestinal disorders.
If the inability to burp interferes with your daily life, please consult a specialist to determine the underlying cause and seek treatment.

When to See a Doctor

  • You should consult a doctor if you experience the following:
  • Inability to burp for an extended period
  • Chronic bloating, early abdominal fullness, or chest tightness
  • A gurgling or rumbling sound in the upper chest near the throat when you are unable to burp
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Symptoms of other gastrointestinal disorders that have not improved with treatment
  • Symptoms that interfere with your daily life
