NC is a 47-year-old-American Chinese who was an avid marathon runner. A couple of years before he came to under Dr. Nademanee’ s care in 2015, he was diagnosed to have Brugada syndrome after experiencing syncopal episodes and received an implantable defibrillator (ICD) for sudden death prevention. Brugada syndrome is an ion channelopathy disease that is associated with increased sudden death risk due to ventricular fibrillation (VF) in a relatively young patients who are otherwise healthy without structural heart disease like NC. Unfortunately, while ICD is effective in terminating VF and saving patient from dying because of the arrhythmia, it does not prevent VF occurrences. So, when NC did another marathon shortly after receiving an ICD, he suffered cardiac arrest during running, fortunately the ICD effectively shocked his heart and reverting it back to normal rhythm (as shown here).
NC was hospitalized after this VF episode and subsequently discharged. Even though he was grateful that ICD saved his live, he became depressed afterwards because his physician forbade him to engage in any strenuous exercise and marathon running is out of the question.
But NC wanted to live his life at the fullest, he sought several medical advice and heard about the ablation procedure for Brugada syndrome, pioneered by Dr. Nademanee in 2011. So, he came to see Dr. Nademanee in February of 2015 and underwent a successful ablation procedure over the arrhythmogenic site of his right heart. And NC has his live back.
After the ablation procedure, NC started exercising including marathon training. In a couple of years that followed, he completed 3 marathon at a very good time and expressed his appreciation by giving one of his medal from Los Angeles marathon (1 year after the procedure) to Dr. Nademanee.
