Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE)

This is a palliative treatment for patients who cannot get operation or being able to get operation after the size of cancerous tumor became smaller. However, a portion of viable cancer cells may remain and new feeding vessels which can be grown up from surrounding tissue.  Therefore, it is necessary to undergo repeated sessions at 6-8 week intervals to eliminate the remaining cancer cells.  Patient should stay at the hospital least one night.

Instructions

  1. The doctor will insert the catheter for the chemotherapy through a large artery near the surface of the skin, such as at the groin. A local anesthetic will first be administered. An x-ray machine will be used to help the doctor visualize the path of the catheter through the artery and towards the liver. Once the right position is reached, contrast will be injected and an image will be captured to assess the disease and the condition of the blood vessels. Then chemotherapy drugs mixed with contrast will be injected through the catheter into the tumor. The blood vessels feeding the tumor are then closed off with a substance, such as Gelfoam®.
  2. During the procedure the patient may experience some pain or discomfort where the blood vessels are closed off. The doctor will continue administering pain medication.
  3. The doctor will remove the catheter from the artery and place pressure on the site for 10-15 minutes to stop the bleeding. The patient must then lie with the leg where the catheter was inserted stretched out for 4-8 hours to ensure the wound is closed and bleeding has stopped.

Term & Conditions :
