What is National Infertility Awareness Week?

Having difficulty conceiving can cause an emotional tornado of sadness, grief, despair, and anger. If you or your partner are having or have had difficulty getting pregnant, or if you are close with someone who has shared their private struggle with infertility with you, you are not alone.

National Infertility Awareness Week, which takes place this year in 2015 from April 19 to 25, is a movement that strives to improve the lives of both men and women who are currently trying to conceive, as well as for people who cannot conceive.

This organization shows care and compassion to people during of all stages of infertility by providing emotional support, connecting them with others in similar situations, and directing them to professionals who can help. It also hopes to increase public awareness of infertility, explains the main causes of infertility, and explores the assisted reproductive techniques options available.

Common causes of male and female infertility

Although contrary to what the media often tells the public, the fact is infertility is nearly equally a men’s and women’s issue. And while it may be caused by a single issue in either partner, it could also be due to a combination of factors that is preventing a pregnancy from occurring or continuing.

Common causes of male infertility include, but are not limited to: sperm quality, quantity, and motility; medical disorders or drugs that reduce fertility; erectile dysfunction, problems with ejaculation, or tube blockage; and genetic disorders affecting sperm production.

Common causes of female infertility include an abnormal uterus, disorders of the Fallopian tubes or cervix, as well as hormonal causes and even premature menopause.

Bumrungrad offers assisted reproductive techniques for both men and women

Fortunately, there are many safe and effective treatments for both men and women who want to overcome infertility. These therapies significantly improve the chances of becoming pregnant.

Male patients experiencing challenges with fertility can be offered techniques including intrauterine insemination (IUI), Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), Microsurgical Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (MESA), Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (PESA), or Testicular Sperm Extraction (TESE).

Female patients are also offered IUI, in addition to in-vitro fertilization (IVF) or ovarian stimulation.

Bumrungrad also offers Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD), a method in which doctors select the strongest and healthiest embryos to be implanted in the uterus.
