The press conference was held on September 7, 2026, at Bumrungrad International Hospital.

Today, dry eye is not limited to the elderly but can affect people of all ages, particularly those in the digital age who use screens continuously for extended periods. Prolonged screen use can reduce blinking frequency and cause tears to evaporate more quickly. Importantly, dry eye is not caused solely by insufficient tear production. It may also result from abnormal tear quality, particularly Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), a disorder of the oil-producing glands in the eyelids. Other contributing factors include behavior and environmental conditions, underlying diseases such as diabetes and autoimmune diseases, eye surgery, and prolonged use of certain medications or eye drops. Warning signs to watch for include eye irritation, burning or itching, sensitivity to light, intermittent blurred vision, or excessive tearing. If these symptoms persist, individuals should consult an ophthalmologist for appropriate diagnosis and treatment.

A key strength of the Bumrungrad Dry Eye Clinic under the Eye Center is its comprehensive approach, connecting Precision Diagnosis with Precision Treatment. Precision Diagnosis focuses on identifying the underlying cause through advanced IDRA technology, which enables comprehensive analysis of the tear film, including meibomian gland imaging, tear film stability, and blinking patterns. These insights allow physicians to move toward Precision Treatment by developing an appropriate treatment plan tailored to the underlying cause and severity of each patient’s condition.

Treatment options range from behavioral modifications, warm compresses, eyelid massage, and cleansing (Eyelid Spa Treatment) to Light-Based Therapy, including Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT) and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), to help restore meibomian gland function. For some patients with severe dry eye, physicians may consider advanced treatments when indicated, such as Autologous Serum Eye Drops or Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) to support tissue repair and regeneration.

All care is delivered under a Personalized Care approach centered on each patient. Specialist physicians across multiple disciplines and a multidisciplinary care team work together to identify the underlying cause, assess disease severity, and consider each patient’s individual factors in order to develop an individualized treatment plan. The goal is not only to relieve symptoms, but also to restore ocular surface balance, minimize the impact on vision, and help patients achieve a better quality of life in the long term.
