Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidy (PGT-A) is a screening method used with IVF or ICSI to detect chromosomal abnormalities in embryos before implantation. A small number of cells are randomly aspirated or biopsied from embryos at either the cleavage stage (6–8 cells, on day 3 after egg retrieval) or the blastocyst stage (day 5 after egg retrieval). These cells are analyzed using Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology. The goal is to select euploid embryos for transfer, ensuring they are healthy and at low risk for genetic disorders like Down syndrome. PGT-A benefits infertile couples, women with recurrent miscarriages, and those with failed IVF attempts by lowering miscarriage risk, reducing IVF cycles, and increasing pregnancy success rates.

Limitations and Risks: PGT-A cannot detect all chromosomal abnormalities and may yield false results due to mosaicism. Standard prenatal testing is still recommended. Insufficient genetic material or poor quality can lead to inconclusive results. There is a small risk of embryo loss or reduced implantation potential. Long-term effects are still being studied, but current data show no increased abnormalities compared to conventional assisted reproductive technologies.
