Clinical Information:
Bacterial infections which cause fever have frequently been associated with a marked reduction in acid secretion. Histamine fast achlorhydria was found in patients suffering from a variety of bacterial infections including typhoid, paratyphoid, pulmonary tuberculosis, pneumonia, and lung abscess.

Reference Value:
No growth or normal flora

Interpretation:
Any microorganism found where  normal flora is not present is considered significant and is reported. For specimens contaminated with the normal bacterial flora, bacteria that are potentially pathogenic are identified.
