Clinical Information (ข้อมูลทางคลินิก):
Apolipoprotein E (APOE) is a major component of lipoproteins and plays an important role in lipid transport and metabolism, influencing plasma LDL‑cholesterol and overall cardiovascular risk. The common APOE alleles (ε2, ε3, ε4) show allele‑dependent effects on lipid profiles: ε4 is generally associated with higher LDL‑cholesterol and an increased risk of ischemic heart disease and stroke, ε3 is considered neutral, and ε2 is often protective for coronary artery disease but may predispose to dyslipidemia in some contexts. APOE genotyping can therefore provide additional risk‑stratification information in patients with hypercholesterolemia, premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, or complex lipid disorders, and may help to individualize lipid‑lowering and preventive strategies when interpreted alongside standard clinical and biochemical data.
