Monoclonal Protein Study, Blood

Test Code:
PEPG

Order Name:
Protein Electrophoresis (Serum)

Collection Specimen Or Container:
Blood/ Plain Blood (Red Top) 6 mL, 1 tube

Specimen Testing Type:
Serum, minimum volume 2 mL

Sub Mission Container:
Plastic tube

Rejection Criteria:
Hemolysis: Hemolysis may cause false elevation in the alpha-2 and beta fractions.
Lipemia: N/A
Icterus: N/A
Other:
  1. Inaccurate results may be obtained on specimens left uncovered, due to evaporation.
  2. The presence of radiopaque contrast media can cause the alpha-2 and beta regions of the electropherogram to appear elevated.

Specimen Stabillity:
Specimen Type Temperature Time
Serum Refrigerated, 2oC to 8oC 7 days
  Frozen, -70oC 1 month

Test Code:
PEPG

Order Name:
Protein Electrophoresis (Serum)

Clinical Information:
Serum protein electrophoresis separates serum globulins into five basic groups (albumin, alpha1, alpha2, beta, and gamma globulins) based upon net molecular charge and size when exposed to an electric current. Individual components are identified based on known rates of protein migration.

Reference Value:
Tests Reference Value Unit
Albumin 3.6 - 5.6 g/dL
Alpha-1 0.2 - 0.4 g/dL
Alpha-2 0.3 - 0.8 g/dL
Beta-1 0.3 - 0.7 g/dL
Beta-2 0.2 - 0.6 g/dL
Gamma 0.6 - 1.5 g/dL
