The esophagus is the part of the body which transfers food and water from the pharynx (located just inside the mouth) to the stomach.  Common issues include heartburn, swallowing difficulties (Dysphagia), GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease), esophageal cancer, and Barrett’s esophagus.

Some of the procedures we use to examine patients’ problems are:

Investigative Diagnostics:

• Barium Swallow
• Capsule endoscopy
• 24 hour pH and 48 hour pH Capsule Bravo monitoring
• EGD (Esophagogastroduodenoscopy)
• Endoscopic ultrasound
• Motility function examinations (e.g. Upper gastrointestinal tract (Esophageal manometry))

The liver is a complex and very important organ whose functions include cleaning of toxins from the blood, amino acid synthesis, and the creation of bile for digestion, among many other functions. Many common liver problems are alcohol or cancer related; others are disease oriented, such as hepatitis..

Some of the procedures we use to examine patients’ problems are:

• Liver Biopsy
• Disida scan
• U/S, CT, MRI-double contrast

The stomach’s primary role is to store food, and through digestive acid and muscular contraction, soften it and reduce it in size for further digestion by the intestines. Common stomach problems include GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease), Gastroenteritis, PUD (Peptic Ulcer Disease), stomach ulcers and dysmotility of the stomach.

• Barium Swallow upper GI series
• Capsule Endoscopy
• Endoscopic ultrasound
• EGD (Esophagogastroduodenoscopy)
• H-pylori (Helicobacter pylori) tests : Serology, Urea breath tests
• Nuclear med gastric emptying study

The two major functions of the pancreas are the creation of insulin for blood sugar regulation, and the creation of pancreatic juices which are used by the small intestine to digest food. The common bile duct (which carries bile from the gallbladder and liver to the small intestine), while not related to the pancreas, has similar treatment methods as the pancreatic duct.

While issues with the pancreas and common bile duct are not very well known, they can be very serious; the most common are cancer related.

The small intestine is where the majority of the absorption of nutrients from food occurs. Common problems with the small intestine are abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation and other changes in bowel habits, Crohn's disease, Celiac disease and intestinal bleeding.

While the main purpose of the colon is to remove waste material from the digestive process, it is a complex organ which also plays an important role in absorbing water and some nutrients (such as salt) from the waste before it exits the body. Common issues with the colon include colitis, colon polyps, diverticulosis, diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease, IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), rectal bleeding, ulcerative colitis and colon cancer.
