Tips From Bumrungrad: 4 Easy Ways to Keep Your Eyes Healthy

March 09, 2015
Your eyes are incredibly precious, so proper care is essential for keeping them healthy and functioning well. Follow these tips to ensure your eyes are in tip-top shape. Never take good vision for granted!

Take a break from the computer, phone, and TV

Do you suffer from any of these symptoms after staring at a glowing screen for too long?
  • Dry eyes
  • Eyestrain
  • Blurry vision
  • Headaches
  • Inability to focus your eyesight
  • Muscle tension in the back, neck, or shoulders

This may be due to staring at electronic screens that have inadequate lighting, glare, poor contrast, and flicker. Long periods of poor posture can also make you uncomfortable.

Take regular breaks from the computer, phone, and TV and allow your eyes to relax. A good rule of thumb is to rest your eyes every 20 minutes by looking 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Be careful of too little or too much lighting

Poor lighting can affect the quality of your work, and in some situations, may be considered a safety hazard. At best, performing tasks in inadequate lighting will strain your eyes and may cause headaches. Invest in task lighting, such as a table or floor lamp, that replicates natural, direct lighting. The luminance levels should be adjustable and the light should be positioned to eliminate shadow and glare.

Bright lighting can also strain eyes, and in the some cases, damage them. Ultra violet rays from the sun can cause damage, but this is easily prevented by wearing sunglasses outside. When choosing sunglasses, look for a pair that blocks 99% to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays. Wraparound frames also protect your eyes from the side, which is a feature commonly overlooked.

Eat healthy food for good eyes

Carrots aren’t the only food that, when eaten, encourages good eye health. Other foods contain beneficial vitamins widely recognized for proper eye and retina function. Eye-healthy foods also include salmon, tuna, and other oily fish; green, leafy vegetables such as collard greens, spinach, and kale; non-meat protein sources like eggs, nuts, and beans.

Visit your doctor regularly

Regardless of your vision accuracy, it’s wise to schedule routine eye checkups with your doctor. Specialized exams can expose problems that you may otherwise not be aware of. Serious problems, such as glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration, can be treated before the damage done to your eyes is irreversible.
