30th Anniversary Bumrungrad International

January 23, 2010

The year 1980 had more than its fair share of historic events and milestones. In the U.S., Ronald Reagan was elected President. A new 24-hour news channel named CNN was launched. In Thailand, General Prem Tinsulanonda was elected Prime Minister.

And on Sukhumvit Road in the heart of Bangkok, a small private hospital named Bumrungrad – with four doctors and a handful of enthusiastic support staff – opened its doors for the first time and began providing high quality care to about 30 patients a day.

To mark Bumrungrad’s 30th anniversary, doctors, employees and patients share their special memories from the past 30 years.

Dr. Watcharaphong Saechere, Physician (general practice)
“Having worked here since the hospital’s opening day, I’ve always felt like Bumrungrad was my home – a place where more and more people come to share their lives together.
Some people can’t imagine working at the same place for 30 years. I have collected so many memories over the course of three decades. For example, one of my patients first came to see me when he was a student. Today, he is still my patient, and now his children are also my patients – I practically consider all of them part of my family.
Here we have really good work support systems and a great atmosphere that makes me feel happy every day when I come to work.”
Mr. Sith Thavisin, Businessman & post-graduate student
“For me, Bumrungrad means warmth and hospitality, and it’s an important part of my life. This is not only because I was born here at the hospital, but also because my family and I have been coming here our entire lives.
The doctors here saved my life twice when I was a child. I had a severe asthma attack at night, and Bumrungrad really took great care of me. I was able to go home the next morning.
Today, the hospital has the highest standards of care. My family and I have great confidence being Bumrungrad customers.”Ms. Kanlaya Chenkolrob, Clinic staff department manager
“The executives always make the staff feel that we are co-owners of the hospital. This makes us want to keep thinking of ideas to keep improving the company.
Throughout these 30 years, Bumrungrad has always kept its leading position without leaving any employees behind; there have never been any layoffs here. When I tell people I work at Bumrungrad, they always say something like ‘Wow! You work at the number one hospital!’ I’m really proud of that.”

  Ms. Wanwipa Khoohiranyarat, Business owner
“I have been coming to Bumrungrad for many years. It’s where I gave birth to each of my four children.
I love the way the doctors and staff have taken care of me. Even though some visits were for more serious medical problems, the hospital always offered good solutions and continued to keep improving its services.
I am always grateful for Bumrungrad’s very professional level of care and the great convenience provided by the hospital. That feeling was with me from the early days, and it’s still with me today.”
Mr. Anuwat Panthangthong, Medical records clerk
“Years ago, all the hospital staff knew each other, because most departments like the outpatient clinic, pharmacy, medical laboratory and even the accounting department were located in the same area. The working atmosphere was very friendly and warm.
After I’d been here about two years, I received a wonderful letter from Mr. Chai Sophonpanich, Bumrungrad’s Chairman and President, complimenting me on my work. I showed it to my mom and told her how proud I was to work at Bumrungrad.
Working here has given me the opportunity to learn from my colleagues who are true professionals, to become a better employee and manager, and to keep learning new things like the latest technologies and innovations, and art and culture.
I’m so proud to see how Bumrungrad has developed into an important place for international medical services.”
  Dr. Chiraporn Hotrakitya, Pediatrician
“When I first started, the hospital had only one building and just four doctors plus a few staff, and everyone knew each other. I remember a speech one of the executives gave at a meeting many years ago; he said he wanted us to help Bumrungrad grow and develop into a national and international medical hub.
Today, that vision is a reality, and Bumrungrad is truly a first-class medical center taking care of patients with even the most complex medical problems. Being part of this dedicated hospital gives me a great sense of pride.”
  Dr. Prapaporn Phimphilai, Physician
“The staff here consider Bumrungrad a second beloved home, where all the doctors work together like a family and are always willing to help one another. And the patients are really nice.
Some patients have been coming to me for so many years that we feel like we are family, too. I think these relationships are truly special and keep us together year after year .”
  Mr. Niwes Rattanachaicharoen, Lawyer
“Bumrungrad is always my first choice for healthcare due to its comprehensive services. My father, my mother and our whole family are all patients here.
I’m always impressed by how clean the hospital is and by all the modern technology and equipment available. I also enjoy the convenient services like scheduling a doctor appointment in advance so that you don’t have to wait long to see your doctor. Once I had a surgery appointment scheduled for 4:00 a.m., and when I arrived on time, everything was ready.
For me, Bumrungrad is the hospital that offers all medical services I might need, and they’ve been my reliable hospital ever since I was a teenager.
Ms. Wanwimol Bangsangnurat, Laboratory quality control employee
“I was one of the staff at Bumrungrad when it first opened. So this year is also my 30th anniversary.
In the beginning, the hospital had just a few staff, and we were treating about 30 patients each day. The neighborhood back then was mostly residential homes, so the new seven-story hospital building really stood out.
During my 30 years here, there have been so many enhancements focused on quality. It has encouraged me to keep developing myself, to keep up to date on innovations and technology.
For Bumrungrad’s 30th anniversary, I want to wish the company continued success for the future.”
