REAL COST: a more reliable way to estimate what you'll pay.

When you ask a hospital how much your medical procedure will cost, what does their answer mean? Does their estimate include doctor’s fees? Inpatient room costs? Is it the lowest possible cost, or does it reflect the prices actually paid by typical patients?

REALCOST information is based on the actual invoices patients paid upon leaving the hospital. It includes surgical fees, doctor’s fees, lab tests and medicine, room fees…the total inpatient or outpatient bill for the procedure.

Understanding the results.

When you select a procedure from the list, the results will usually show 3 figures:

  • The MEDIAN cost is what you could expect to pay if you were an “average patient.” It means half the patients who had this procedure paid more than this, and half paid less.
  • The LOW cost is the 25th percentile of actual costs, meaning only about 1 in 4 patients paid less than this..
  • The HIGH cost is the 75th percentile of actual costs, meaning only about 1 in 4 patients paid more than this.

Most patients paid between the "low" and "high" figures. Of course, actual costs will depend on your individual case. We will provide you with a better estimate after our specialists evaluate you.

If we offer a package price for the procedure, it is listed. Hospitals generally offer package prices for patients whose cases are straightforward, not complicated. Packages require that you meet specific criteria. Some doctors may not participate in the package program. If you’re not sure whether you qualify for a package price, be sure to ask in advance.
