Welcome to Better Health, the magazine for patients and friends of Bumrungrad International.
In this issue, we’re devoting special attention to chronic health conditions, beginning on page 4, with an in-depth look at diabetes and high blood pressure (hypertension). These two diseases share many similarities; both are experiencing painfully high growth rates in Thailand and around the world, and both share risk factors including obesity, unhealthy lifestyle choices, and family history. Finally, both can be kept under control through a combination of proper medical care, healthy lifestyle changes, and a patient’s sense of commitment and discipline to “live with” rather than “suffer from” these life-long health threats.
Research has transformed our understanding of diabetes and hypertension and greatly impacted the success of chronic disease management. Access to regular high quality medical care and making healthy lifestyle modifications are the pillars of chronic disease control. Ultimately, patients must take charge and be responsible for managing their condition, and that’s not such an easy commitment to maintain. Beginning on page 16 is an inspiring profile of Mr. Kajornkiat Kongwanichkitjaruen; there’s no better example of how a chronic disease doesn’t have to keep us from making the most of each day and experiencing a most fulfilling life.
And finally, turn to page 12 for special coverage marking Bumrungrad’s 30th anniversary. Better Health invited a number of Bumrungrad’s original doctors and staff members – and one of the earliest maternity patients – for a nostalgic look back at the vivid memories and important milestones that have been 30 years in the making.
