Neurotransmitters (VMA, HVA, 5-HIAA) (U-24 hrs.)

Clinical Information:
Vanillylmandelic acic (VMA) and Homovanillic acid (HVA) are degradation product of adernaline and norepirnephrine, respectively. 5-Hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) are degradation product of serotonin. They play a key role in the transmittion of impulses in the nervous system.

Reference Value:
Adults:
VMA = 1600 - 7300 microgram/24 h.
HVA = 1800 - 6900 microgram/24 h
5-HIAA <8200 mg/24 h

Children: VMA and HVA refence value depend on age
VMA:
Age Reference value
0-2 weeks 0 - 850   microgram/24 h
2 - 8 weeks 0 - 1300 microgram/24 h
2 - 6 months 0 - 1500 microgram/24 h
7 - 12 months 0 - 1700 microgram/24 h
1 - 5  years 0 - 2200 microgram/24 h
6 - 10 years 0 - 3600 microgram/24 h

11 - 15 years 0 - 8800 microgram/24 h

Interpretation:
High level of VMA and HVA was found in neuroendocrine tumors including neuroblastomas, pheochromocytoma and paraglanglioma. High level of 5-HIAA was found in serotonin producing tumor (carcinoids).
