What is a EPS?

Electro Physiologic Study is a diagnostic procedure of which the electrical function of the heart is evaluated. It is an invasive procedure.

How is it done?

The procedure is usually performed through puncture sites at the right groin or right elbow areas. It is done under local anesthesia. In some instances, general anesthesia is preferable to alleviate anxiety or to lessen any symptom during the evaluation and required treatment.

Why is it done?

The procedure is done to verify the cause and mechanism of the abnormal heart rhythm. They are essential to the treatment plan.

Risk & complications

There are infrequent potential complications such as bleeding at puncture sites, perforation of heart muscle, abnormal heart rhythm and interruption of heart conduction.

Twenty-four hour, ambulatory ECG monitoring

Candidate eligibility
Patients who are

-  Suffer from recurrent palpitation or loss of consciousness of unknown cause.
-  Known to have supra ventricular tachycardia or ventricular tachycardia.
-  Known to have conduction abnormality that may require pacemaker.
-  Survive sudden death
